Video Tip #8 October 2022

Leave MATH Out of the Conversation!

One plus one equals two makes sense to most of us but not to folks with short-term memory loss. When conversations come up that contain issues that have a math component too often we try to “help them stay in our reality” by asking math questions. Asking them to do math such as adding or subtracting numbers in a checkbook or determining the age of loved ones too often lead to frustration and anger. This video looks at the negative interactions that can occur. It offers alternative conversation options to address an issue that has a math component. Knowing that the person’s perception of reality is different than our perspective provides us with the power to keep the lines of communication open while reducing the stress for all involved.
